When I first started researching Gerald’s life and career it became very obvious how important Stockholm was to him.

He first visited Stockholm in June 1954 to star in the drama series “Foreign Intrigue”.  All the studio work was performed in the studios at Filmstaden, just outside the city centre, and a few of the episodes also featured location shots of the city.  Gerald and the film crew also travelled extensively throughout Europe during the year he was involved in the filming of “Foreign Intrigue” (later re-named “Cross Current”), visiting Vienna, where his character, Christopher Storm’s hotel, the Frontier, was located, Paris and Copenhagen.  It was while filming a scene at the George and the Dragon Statue on Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s old town, that he met Mai Dietrich, who was script editor for the show.  Gerald married Mai in 1958.  He visited Stockholm another 3 times, each time to either film a pilot (“Rough Sketch” in 1956), the comedy Western film “Wild West Story” (1964) and, of course, in 1968 to film the pilot “Private Entrance”, referred to in more detail elsewhere in this website.  While visiting, he and Mai lived on the island of Lidingö, located to the east of the city, and on Södermalm, where he died.

During my initial stages of research I accidentally discovered Gerald’s “Find A Grave” website, only to find that the exact location of his final resting place was not known.  Two months later, after many e-mails to the Stockholm authorities,  I was finally told the location of his gravestone had been discovered in the Garden of Remembrance of Lidingö Kyrka.  As I live in Scotland, it was neither expensive nor difficult to go to Stockholm for a few days.  Along with friends, I chose to visit during the week of what would have been his birthday, 11 June.  My subsequent annual visits to Stockholm are detailed hereunder.

Gerald loved Stockholm, and now I know why.  It is the most beautiful city I have ever visited, and Lidingö the most beautiful island.  I have made friends there and I love Stockholm, too.  And the adventure is not over yet!
